Apprenticeship journey from summer helper to marine engine technician

From a summer job to an apprenticeship, Jani Uusikumpu’s path at Millog Marine & Power in Vantaa has been one of continuous learning. The variety in his work keeps him motivated and engaged every day.

Finding my place in the working world has been a journey of self-discovery and over the past ten years, I’ve explored many different fields. In the summer of 2023, I took a summer job at Millog Marine & Power in Vantaa. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to ask my supervisor about continuing as an apprentice. My request was welcomed, and I’ve been in this role ever since.

I am currently training to become a machine technician through an apprenticeship at Keuda, the Keski-Uusimaa joint municipal authority for education and training. My hands-on work at Millog Marine & Power is complemented by school courses that cover topics I can’t learn on the job. Additionally, I take general education classes like mathematics and Finnish. The flexibility of the studies allows me to progress at my own pace, aiming to graduate by next spring.

The varied workdays bring joy

At Millog Marine & Power, I primarily handle marine engine maintenance, both on vessels and in the workshop. Maintaining large marine engines is dirty and physically demanding. Engine rooms are hot, the tools are heavy, and some bolts require a lot of strength to turn. Despite the challenging conditions, I thrive in this environment. As a former athlete, I get a sense of accomplishment and a rush of endorphins after a physically demanding day.

What I also like about this job is the problem-solving and the tangible results of my efforts. I usually work with one or more colleagues, though some tasks can be done independently. When I started, I had little experience with engines and their maintenance. Over the past year, I’ve learned a lot and I’ve been given more responsibility as my skills have grown.

The diversity of my work is what makes it so enjoyable. I’ve previously worked in manufacturing, where the daily routine became monotonous. I realized I needed a job that challenges me and offers new learning experiences. Now as a technician, my days are refreshingly varied. On assignments, I get to see different shipyards and vessels and meet new people, which is stimulating and rewarding.

At the Vantaa site, there’s a strong team spirit, and the workshop is free from clique-culture. I was warmly welcomed, and it’s always a pleasure to come to work.

A future at sea?

Being proficient in English has been invaluable in my job, as I often work with international crews and occasionally travel abroad for assignments. My studies and work have deepened my interest in marine engines, and I now frequently read related articles in my free time, usually in English. This has significantly expanded my professional vocabulary.

For now, I’m focused on completing my studies and graduating. However, my apprenticeship has ignited an interest in maritime careers, and I can see myself pursuing further studies to become a ship’s engineer for instance and working at sea in the future.
