From Engines to Encores: Lauri Laaksonen is a Music-Making Shipyard Manager

Whether on or off duty, the unit manager at Millog Marine & Power’s Teijo shipyard always has plenty of irons in the fire.

The sea holds a special place in the life of Lauri Laaksonen, unit manager at Millog Marine & Power’s Teijo shipyard. His connection to the water began in childhood in Halikko, Salo, and deepened through summers at cottages in Teijo and Särkisalo, as well as through his hobby of boating. Now, the seascape opens up right from the office yard.

Laaksonen started in his new position at the beginning of November 2024. He has settled in well and is grateful for the warm welcome he has received.

A trained marine engineer, Laaksonen has worked in various roles, including in the designing of new vessels. At the shipyard, he’s had the opportunity to explore older maritime technologies.

“I’ve made an effort to follow the work of the technicians closely and have asked lots of questions about how things are done. I think it’s important to really understand the nature of the work here at the shipyard,” Laaksonen says.

“Refurbishing ships from, say, the 1950s is a completely different task to designing new cruise liners. No matter how well you prepare, some things only become clear once the vessel is physically in the yard.”

I believe the best results come when everyone is heard.

Laaksonen is involved in managing and developing the shipyard’s daily operations. His role includes meeting with clients and working alongside the sales department to prepare quotations. Life at the shipyard is dynamic — one vessel departs, another arrives, and a new offer is already in the works.

The variety suits him well. Even outside of work, he keeps himself busy — especially with his beloved hobby, music. As the lead vocalist in a band, he performs everything from tangos and waltzes to Käärijä’s Cha Cha Cha. The group plays at weddings and corporate events, and is often on the road nearly every Saturday from spring until Christmas.

“The other members of the band are professional musicians. It’s a joy to play with them. While touring does take up a lot of time, it’s a great counterbalance to the routines of daily work.”

In his role, Laaksonen aims to be a fair and considerate leader. He places great importance on safety, fairness, and equality.

“For me, it’s essential to develop operations in cooperation with the entire work community. I believe the best results come when everyone is heard.”
